The chairman reviews an outstanding 2024 which saw some incredible achievements
Chairman’s Review of 2024
As we reflect on an extraordinary 2024, it is with immense pride that I recount a year marked by outstanding achievements, milestones, and the positive community spirit that is typical of rugby. This year has truly been a testament to our collective dedication, passion, and ambition to grow the sport of rugby in Oman.
Check out the gallery at the end of the post to see some of the highlights of this year
FEBRUARY Oman Touch 6s at Qurum Park
The year opened with our flagship event, held at the picturesque Qurum Park. Through the Oman Touch 6s we not only continue to grow participation and engagement at all levels within Oman, but we also grow our international footprint by inviting teams from abroad. With eight teams participating, this event brought together players of all skill levels, in a mixed social format, underscoring our inclusive and community-driven approach to the sport. We also welcomed the 7th registered club in Oman…Oryx RFC
JULY Touch Rugby World Cup in the UK
One of the most remarkable highlights of the year, in fact the history of rugby in Oman, was our selection to participate in the Touch Rugby World Cup held in the United Kingdom. This prestigious event saw our squad train with unparalleled commitment, clocking three sessions a day to prepare for the international stage. The team, composed of 50% Omani nationals, represented our nation with pride, demonstrating both skill and determination. Finishing 16th out of 19 teams in their inaugural competition was a significant achievement for a debutant team, showcasing the progress we have made in such a short time.
MONTHLY High Performance Training
To support our ambitious goals, we established a high performance training group that is open to all club players, so they can get elite level training from the national team coach.
This group will be pivotal in enhancing the depth of talent within our ranks, and ensuring we continue to raise the standard of play at club level and national level.
NOVEMBER Record-Breaking Muscat 6s
The Muscat 6s broke all manner of records this year. For the first time ever, we featured two divisions, male and mixed. There were a total of 10 teams, and over 200 players participating, which broke records for touch rugby in Oman. Notably, approximately 40 Omani nationals and 25 female players competed, reflecting our commitment to diversity and inclusion. These numbers are a testament to the growing popularity of the sport and our efforts to make it accessible to all. We also welcomed the 8th registered club in Oman…Mehlah RFC
DECEMBER Dubai Rugby 7s
Muscat RFC have been regulars at the DXB 7s since the 1970s, but this year a female team also entered the tournament, and whilst they lost in the semi final, they will remain pioneers in women’s rugby for Oman, and have laid the path forward for future generations of women.
2025 The Path Ahead
The achievements of 2024 have set a solid foundation for the future of rugby in Oman. As we look ahead, we remain committed to fostering talent, expanding participation, especially for Omani nationals, youth and females.
As 2025 begins, we continue with our plans to start a school youth talent program and to represent Oman with pride on both local and international stages. And while our focus has been on touch rugby for our formative years, we will soon be starting 7s rugby…watch this space.
None of this would have been possible without the players, coaches and referees, but we also have to thank the unwavering support of our volunteers, parents, and sponsors. Our success is their success.
So thank you for making 2024 a truly outstanding year.
And here’s to an even brighter future for rugby in Oman!
